Hamas returns remains of Israeli soldier in Türkiye-brokered exchange

Hamas has returned the remains of Israeli soldier Hadar Goldin under the ongoing Gaza ceasefire agreement, with Turkish security sources confirming Türkiye facilitated the transfer. The soldier had been captured during the 2014 conflict, and his remains were identified in Tel Aviv after Red Cross mediation.
The Palestinian group Hamas has transferred the remains of Israeli soldier Hadar Goldin to Israeli authorities as part of the ongoing ceasefire agreement in Gaza. The Israeli military confirmed receiving the body through Red Cross teams operating in southern Gaza, with formal identification conducted at the National Institute of Forensic Medicine in Tel Aviv.
Türkiye's Mediation Role
Security sources confirmed to Anadolu that Türkiye played a crucial facilitation role in the repatriation process. "We confirm that the return of Hadar Goldin’s remains to Israel after 11 years was successfully secured through Türkiye’s efforts," the sources stated, characterizing the outcome as the result of intensive diplomatic work. They further noted that Hamas demonstrated "openness and commitment to the ceasefire" through the transfer and that efforts continue to evacuate approximately 200 Gazan civilians reportedly trapped in tunnels.
Ceasefire Implementation Progress
Hamas announced earlier Sunday its intention to return Goldin's remains, honoring the ceasefire terms that have already seen the release of 20 living Israeli captives and the transfer of 26 sets of remains, predominantly Israeli. Israeli authorities, however, have disputed one set of remains as not matching their captive records. The ceasefire, which took effect on October 10, represents the most significant diplomatic breakthrough since Israel's military offensive began in October 2023.
Broader Agreement Framework
The initial phase of the ceasefire arrangement includes prisoner exchanges between Hamas and Israel, alongside plans for Gaza's reconstruction and the establishment of a new governing structure that excludes Hamas from power. The agreement unfolds against the devastating backdrop of Israel's military campaign, which Gaza health authorities report has killed more than 69,000 Palestinians and injured over 170,600 others since hostilities escalated.
