The death toll from Wednesday's massive apartment complex fire in Hong Kong has climbed to 146, with approximately 150 people still unaccounted for as rescue operations enter their fifth day. The blaze at Wang Fuk Court, which injured 79 people including 12 firefighters, represents the city's deadliest fire in decades. Authorities have detained three construction company officials as Hong Kong observes a three-day mourning period for the victims.

Hong Kong's death toll from Wednesday's catastrophic apartment fire has risen to 146 victims as search operations continue for approximately 150 missing individuals. The devastating blaze at Wang Fuk Court residential complex has become the city's most lethal fire incident in decades, prompting an official three-day mourning period that began Saturday.

Ongoing rescue efforts

Despite firefighters bringing the flames under control, rescue teams continue their painstaking work for the fifth consecutive day at the disaster site. Authorities have warned that the death count will likely increase further as more victims are recovered from the eight-tower complex that housed an estimated 4,000 residents across 1,900 apartments. The fire initially erupted around noon on Wednesday and rapidly intensified due to bamboo scaffolding and foam plastic window coverings installed for ongoing renovation work.

Criminal investigation underway

Law enforcement authorities have taken three individuals into custody in connection with the tragedy, including two directors and an engineering consultant from Prestige Construction & Engineering Company. The suspects face potential manslaughter charges as investigators examine whether safety violations contributed to the fire's rapid spread. The incident marked the first time in 17 years that Hong Kong activated a Level 5 fire alarm, the highest emergency classification in the city's five-tier warning system.

Community impact and response

The disaster has left 79 injured persons, including a dozen firefighters who responded to the emergency. Approximately 800 displaced residents have been relocated to temporary accommodations including hostels, hotels, and transitional housing facilities. The massive residential complex fire represents the most significant loss of life from a fire incident in Hong Kong in over two decades, shaking the densely populated financial hub and raising urgent questions about construction safety protocols in high-rise buildings.
