A new team of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors has begun work at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine. The rotation was secured by Russian military and security forces. The facility, Europe's largest, has been under Russian control since early in the conflict.

A fresh team of inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency has commenced duties at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in southeastern Ukraine. According to a statement from the plant's press service, a regular rotation was successfully completed on Wednesday, with four new specialists now tasked with observing and assessing operational safety at the facility. The Zaporizhzhia plant, Europe's largest nuclear power station, has been under Russian military control since March 2022.

Security Provided by Russian Forces

The statement detailed that security for the inspector rotation was provided by personnel from the Russian Defense Ministry, the Russian National Guard, and the regional branch of the Russian Interior Ministry. This underscores the continuing reality of Moscow's de facto authority over the site, which remains a critical international concern due to persistent risks of a nuclear incident amid ongoing warfare.

Context of Ongoing Monitoring and Past Challenges

IAEA experts have been present at the plant since September 1, 2022, following an initial visit by agency Director General Rafael Grossi. The outgoing inspection team oversaw operations during a particularly precarious period that included a 30-day disconnection from external power supplies. The plant's administration credited the IAEA's constant presence with contributing to the successful completion of repairs on external power lines, a vital safeguard against a potential meltdown.

Regional Implications and International Concerns

The continued IAEA mission represents a rare point of sustained international cooperation at the site, aimed at preventing a catastrophic nuclear disaster. For regional stakeholders like Türkiye, which has consistently warned against the severe humanitarian and environmental consequences of any incident at Zaporizhzhia, the safe and uninterrupted work of IAEA monitors is of paramount importance for Black Sea security and regional stability.
