The Indian and British navies have launched Exercise Konkan 25, a major bilateral maritime drill featuring aircraft carrier groups, as UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer prepares for his first official visit to New Delhi. The military cooperation underscores strengthening defense ties between the two nations.

Indian and British naval forces have initiated joint maritime exercises off India's western coast, signaling enhanced military cooperation ahead of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer's inaugural official visit to New Delhi. The bilateral Exercise Konkan 25, which commenced on Sunday, represents a significant demonstration of naval partnership between the two Commonwealth nations.

Historic Carrier Group Integration

The British High Commission in India described the drills as a "historic first" marking the initial integration of UK and Indian aircraft carrier strike groups. According to Indian defense officials, the exercise involves two phases continuing through October 12, featuring complex operational drills that include anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare operations along with flying missions and seamanship exercises.

Advanced Naval Assets Deployed

Both nations have committed substantial naval resources to the exercise, deploying frontline warships including aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates, and submarines alongside shore-based air assets. The Indian Defense Ministry emphasized that these drills aim to increase combined maritime and air capabilities while reinforcing both countries' commitment to maintaining secure and open seas.

Strengthening Strategic Partnership

The naval cooperation precedes Prime Minister Starmer's two-day visit beginning Wednesday, where he will meet with Indian leaders to discuss comprehensive strategic partnership matters. According to India's Foreign Ministry, the leaders will address diverse aspects of bilateral relations and exchange views on regional and global security issues, with the joint exercises serving as a platform to enhance interoperability and regional maritime stability.
