Iran accuses US of violating Hormuz ceasefire

Tehran has formally accused Washington of breaching the ceasefire by targeting Iranian oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz and carrying out airstrikes on civilian areas in southern Iran. Iran’s military claims it retaliated against US naval vessels, causing “significant damage.”
Iran has leveled serious accusations against the United States for allegedly violating the existing ceasefire in the Gulf region. In the early hours of Friday, a spokesman for Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya military headquarters, Ebrahim Zolfaghari, stated that US forces targeted an Iranian oil tanker moving from coastal waters near Jask toward the Strait of Hormuz, as well as another Iranian vessel close to the UAE’s Fujairah port.
Airstrikes on civilian areas and retaliation
Zolfaghari further alleged that Washington conducted airstrikes on civilian-populated areas in Bandar Khamir, Sirik, and Qeshm Island in southern Iran, with the cooperation of “some regional countries.” He claimed that Iran’s armed forces responded immediately by attacking US military vessels east of the Strait of Hormuz and south of Chabahar port, inflicting “significant damage” on American assets. The statement came shortly after two loud explosions were heard in western Tehran, followed by sustained anti-aircraft fire near District 22 and Ahmadabad Mostofi, according to Iran’s official IRNA news agency.
Escalating tensions and regional impact
The incident marks a sharp deterioration in the fragile truce brokered by Pakistan last month and later extended indefinitely by President Trump. For Türkiye, which maintains close diplomatic and trade ties with both Iran and Gulf nations, any renewed military escalation near the Strait of Hormuz poses direct risks to energy imports and regional stability. Ankara has consistently called for restraint and dialogue. Neither the Pentagon nor the White House has issued an immediate response to Iran’s allegations.
