Iran at UN accuses US and Israel of ‘war of aggression’

Tehran’s envoy tells Security Council that Washington and its allies have waged a large-scale offensive since Feb. 28, disrupting maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations on Monday directly accused the United States and Israel of launching an “unwarranted large-scale war of aggression” against the Islamic Republic, blaming them for rising tensions and threats to maritime navigation in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Tehran rejects allegations, points to US actions
Speaking before the UN Security Council during a session on maritime security, Amir Saeid Iravani dismissed accusations leveled against Iran and instead highlighted what he called repeated violations of international law by Washington and its allies. “Since 28 February, the United States and the Israeli regime have waged an unwarranted large-scale war of aggression against Iran,” Iravani said, arguing that such actions breach the UN Charter and endanger both regional and global stability.
US accused of ‘maritime blockade’ and piracy
The Iranian envoy further charged that the US has imposed a de facto maritime blockade, including the seizure of Iranian commercial vessels and the detention of their crews — acts he described as illegal and comparable to piracy. “These dangerous, escalating measures violate international law … and amount to acts of aggression,” he stated. Iravani emphasized that Iran, as a coastal state bordering the Strait of Hormuz, has taken “necessary and practical measures” to ensure safe passage and prevent the waterway from being used for hostile military purposes.

Double standards and responsibility for disruptions
The Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits, has faced major disruptions since early March following the US-Israeli joint offensive that began on Feb. 28. While hostilities are currently paused, efforts to secure a permanent end continue. Iravani dismissed criticism from other UN member states as “baseless and politically motivated,” accusing some delegations of applying “double standards” on maritime security. He concluded by placing full responsibility for any interference with shipping in the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, and the Strait of Hormuz squarely on the US and its supporters.
