Iran calls US Hormuz blockade ‘revenge against global economy’

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei condemned the US blockade of Iranian ports as “revenge against the global economy,” questioning whether escalation that disrupts world trade can achieve strategic gains. His remarks followed President Trump’s warning that any Iranian vessel approaching the blockade would be “immediately eliminated.”
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei on Monday denounced the US blockade measures targeting Iranian ports as an act of “revenge against the global economy.” In a post on social media, he wrote: “Can an illegal ‘war of choice’ be won through a ‘revenge of choice’ against the global economy?! Is it ever worthwhile to cut off one’s nose to spite one’s face?!” His comments came after President Donald Trump warned that any Iranian vessels approaching the US‑imposed blockade would be “immediately eliminated.”
Blockade and Military Threats
Trump claimed on Truth Social that Iran’s navy had been “completely obliterated,” asserting that 158 vessels had been destroyed, and warned remaining ships not to approach US forces enforcing the blockade. The warning followed the start of a US Central Command operation to block maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports. CENTCOM said the blockade would be enforced “impartially against vessels of all nations” calling at Iranian ports in the Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, but added that freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz to non‑Iranian ports would not be affected.
