Iran military warns Israel over Lebanon ceasefire violations

Iran's military command has warned Israel of a "strong response" if attacks in southern Lebanon persist, accusing Israeli forces of violating the ceasefire 84 times in just two days. The warning comes despite a US-Iran memorandum aimed at ending regional hostilities, with Israeli officials indicating operations will continue.
Iran's armed forces have issued a stark warning to Israel regarding continued military operations in southern Lebanon, threatening retaliatory action if the attacks do not cease. The Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, Iran's top military command, accused Israeli forces of breaching the ceasefire agreement on 84 separate occasions over the past 48 hours, according to a statement carried by the ISNA news agency.
Escalation despite diplomatic progress
The military command stated that Israeli forces had persisted with operations in southern Lebanon despite US President Donald Trump's announcement that the war had ended. It warned that if Israeli "aggression" in the region continues, Tehran's armed forces would deliver a "strong response." The statement underscores the fragility of the current security situation along the Lebanese-Israeli border, even as Washington and Tehran work toward formalising their memorandum of understanding.
Divergent objectives on Lebanon
Iranian officials have consistently maintained that ending Israeli attacks across regional fronts—particularly in Lebanon—remains a core objective of the memorandum expected to be signed on Friday. However, Israeli officials have signalled that military operations in Lebanon will proceed regardless of the US-Iran agreement, casting doubt on the prospects for de-escalation on the Lebanese front. The apparent disconnect between Tehran's expectations and Jerusalem's intentions has raised concerns among regional observers about the sustainability of any ceasefire.
Humanitarian toll and territorial occupation
Israel has been conducting an offensive in Lebanon since March 2, resulting in thousands of casualties and displacing more than one million people, according to official figures. Israeli forces currently occupy territory in southern Lebanon, including areas held for decades and others seized during the 2023–2024 war. During the latest offensive, Israeli troops have advanced more than 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) into Lebanese territory. Ankara, which maintains diplomatic channels with all parties, continues to advocate for restraint and a comprehensive diplomatic resolution to the crisis.
