Tehran reports that 2,500 students were expelled from the UAE, with online learning now overseen by Oman and Iran as Gulf ties fray amid ongoing conflict.

Iran announced on Wednesday that seven Iranian-run schools in the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait were closed during the recent war with the United States and Israel, disrupting education for hundreds of students.

Remote learning under Omani supervision

Ali Farhadi, spokesman for Iran’s Education Ministry, said some affected students are continuing their studies online under the supervision of Iranian schools in Oman, while others are being monitored directly by institutions inside Iran. “The goal is to ensure that there is no disruption in the education of Iranian students under any circumstances,” he told the official IRNA news agency. Farhadi also criticized what he called an “illegal” decision by the UAE to expel roughly 2,500 Iranian students, adding that Oman has agreed to host their education for the remainder of the academic year.

Schools operating remotely in three Gulf states

According to Farhadi, Iranian schools in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE are currently functioning entirely through remote learning, with the academic year expected to finish virtually. The closures stem from the broader military conflict that erupted on February 28, when the US and Israel launched a joint offensive against Iran. Tehran responded with strikes on US-linked targets across the Gulf region.

Ceasefire and diplomatic deadlock

A ceasefire was announced on April 8 following Pakistani mediation, with talks held in Islamabad on April 11-12, but no agreement was reached. US President Donald Trump later extended the truce at Pakistan’s request, pending a new proposal from Tehran. However, Trump signaled on Monday that he is unlikely to accept Iran’s latest offer, which would reopen the Strait of Hormuz while postponing nuclear program negotiations.
