Iran urges UN to reject ‘provocative’ US draft on Hormuz

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called on UN member states to oppose a US-drafted resolution on the Strait of Hormuz, calling it “one-sided and provocative.” He argued the draft ignores US-Israeli aggression and a naval blockade against Tehran.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has urged UN member nations to reject a United States-proposed draft resolution on the Strait of Hormuz, which he described as “one-sided and provocative,” according to a statement from Tehran’s Foreign Ministry on Thursday.
Root cause ignored, says Tehran
In a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi, China’s UN envoy Fu Cong, and all UN member states, Araghchi criticized the draft for overlooking what Iran considers the “root cause” of current tensions: US and Israeli military actions against the Islamic Republic. “The current situation is directly and exclusively the result of their unjustified and illegal war of aggression,” he wrote. He argued that the US-Bahraini draft seeks to distort realities on the ground and justify ongoing unlawful US actions in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.
Warning against Security Council abuse
Araghchi warned against attempts to misuse the UN Security Council to legitimize unilateral actions and violations of international law. “The international community should not allow the Security Council to be abused by aggressors or turned into a tool for legitimizing illegal actions,” he said. He also criticized the draft for ignoring repeated US ceasefire violations, including a naval blockade and attacks on Iranian vessels. He rejected references to Chapter VII of the UN Charter as “unjustified and disproportionate,” warning that adoption would weaken the Council’s credibility and set a dangerous precedent.

Path to stability
Araghchi stated that normal maritime transit through the Strait of Hormuz would resume if the war permanently ends and sanctions and the blockade against Iran are lifted. “The path to stability lies in the United States adhering to international law, not in misusing the Security Council in ways that further complicate the situation,” he wrote. He called on governments to refrain from supporting or co-sponsoring the draft, accusing Washington of exerting pressure for political and propaganda purposes. Regional tensions have escalated since the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28, triggering Iranian retaliation and disruptions in the strait. A Pakistan-brokered ceasefire took effect April 8 but failed to produce a lasting deal. The US has enforced a naval blockade since April 13. Türkiye continues to advocate for dialogue and de-escalation, warning that any UN resolution that deepens confrontation would harm regional stability.
