Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian warned that continued inaction over Israeli military operations risks intensifying conflict across the Middle East, as Tehran reiterated its commitment to defend national sovereignty amid ongoing US-Israeli strikes and rising instability in the Gulf region.

Iran’s presidency said Pezeshkian conveyed the message during a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron, where both leaders discussed the latest regional developments and the consequences of continued military escalation targeting Iran.

Warning over international inaction

Pezeshkian criticised what he described as global “negligence and indifference” toward Israeli actions, arguing that such a stance would inevitably lead to further escalation. He stated that Iran had come under attack while still engaged in diplomatic negotiations, calling the situation a repeat violation occurring within a short timeframe.

He added that Tehran views the strikes as clear breaches of international law and directly attributed responsibility to the United States and its allies supporting Israel.

Security risks in Gulf and Hormuz

The Iranian president pointed to growing instability in key strategic areas, including the Strait of Hormuz, warning that the conflict has already disrupted maritime navigation and heightened insecurity across the Gulf. The waterway remains a critical route for global energy shipments, amplifying concerns over wider economic fallout.

France calls for diplomacy

Macron, according to the statement, stressed the urgency of de-escalation and reaffirmed France’s readiness to support diplomatic efforts. He emphasised the importance of restoring dialogue channels to prevent further deterioration of the situation.

Ongoing strikes and retaliation

Since late February, the United States and Israel have carried out sustained airstrikes across Iran, resulting in significant casualties and damage. Iranian forces have responded with missile and drone attacks targeting Israel as well as locations in Jordan, Iraq and Gulf countries hosting US military assets. The exchange has contributed to volatility in global markets and disruptions in aviation routes.
