Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian declared Wednesday that any attack on Iran launched from US military installations in neighboring countries would be "unacceptable under any circumstances." Speaking during a phone call with Oman's Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, Pezeshkian also recalled a strike on a school in Minab that killed 168 students.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian issued a stark warning Wednesday against any potential attacks on Iranian territory originating from US military bases in neighboring countries. During a telephone conversation with Oman's Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, Pezeshkian emphasized that such actions would be "unacceptable under any circumstances," according to Iranian state media reports.

School strike casualties recalled

Pezeshkian referenced an earlier attack in the southern Iranian city of Minab, stating "At the very beginning of this brutal war, there was an attack on a school in Minab that led to the martyrdom of 168 students." The mention of civilian casualties underscores Tehran's narrative of the conflict as an unjust war disproportionately affecting non-combatants, particularly children, and may serve to rally international sympathy for Iran's position.

Oman discussions cover regional fallout

The two leaders discussed regional developments amid ongoing US and Israeli attacks on Iran and their potential international repercussions. Pezeshkian also addressed reports of an incident at Oman's Port of Salalah, stating that Iran's military actions target only areas directly involved in attacks against the country and promising that "a comprehensive investigation will certainly be carried out regarding this incident." The remarks suggest Tehran is seeking to manage its relationship with Oman, which has historically played a mediating role in regional conflicts.

Conflict enters third week with heavy toll

The US-Israeli joint strikes on Iran, launched Feb. 28, have killed more than 1,300 people including former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and over 150 schoolgirls. Tehran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and several Gulf countries hosting US military assets. Pezeshkian's warning about US bases in neighboring countries reflects Iran's concern that the conflict could expand further if regional nations permit their territory to be used for launching attacks, potentially drawing additional actors into the widening war.
