Iran warns US fighter jets over Strait of Hormuz tensions

Iran’s military has issued a warning over the continued presence of US manned and unmanned aircraft in the Strait of Hormuz, saying any interference or breach of its maritime rules will be met with a swift and decisive response. Tehran described the strategic waterway as a red line for national sovereignty and regional security.
Iran US tensions over the Strait of Hormuz escalated on Thursday after Iran’s military warned that American fighter jets and drones operating in the area pose a threat to regional stability, pledging a strong response to any perceived violations in the strategic shipping corridor.
Warning over military presence in key waterway
The Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters of Iran’s armed forces, cited by the semi-official Fars News Agency, said continued US aerial activity over the Strait of Hormuz is undermining security and could endanger maritime stability in one of the world’s most critical energy routes.
The statement said Iran would respond firmly to any actions it considers hostile or unlawful, stressing that any US military interference would be met with a rapid and decisive reaction from Iranian armed forces.
Strait of Hormuz declared a red line
Tehran reiterated that it views the Strait of Hormuz as part of its sovereign territory, describing security in the waterway as a non-negotiable national priority. The military warned that safeguarding the route is considered a “red line” for Iran’s defence establishment.
Iran also insisted that all commercial and oil tankers passing through the strait must follow navigation routes designated by Iranian authorities. Vessels that fail to comply, it said, could face immediate enforcement action.
Regional diplomacy and ongoing negotiations
According to Iranian statements, previous understandings with the United States included provisions related to easing tensions and reopening maritime access routes, alongside discussions involving broader security and nuclear-related issues.
Diplomatic efforts reportedly continue through third-party mediation, with negotiations involving regional actors aimed at establishing a longer-term framework for maritime security and broader geopolitical stability.
The Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for global energy shipments, remains a frequent flashpoint between Iran and Western naval forces, particularly the United States.
