Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani held high-level meetings in Beirut on Thursday as Syria and Lebanon explored ways to deepen bilateral relations, strengthen economic cooperation and exchange views on regional developments. The discussions reflected ongoing diplomatic efforts to reinforce cooperation between the two neighboring countries.
Focus on bilateral cooperation
According to a statement from Syria's Foreign Ministry, al-Shaibani and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun discussed opportunities to expand economic collaboration while reviewing regional and international issues of shared interest. The ministry said both sides emphasized the importance of advancing Syrian-Lebanese relations through "mutual respect and good neighborliness."
The talks also addressed broader cooperation between Damascus and Beirut, with both governments expressing support for stronger diplomatic engagement and practical coordination in areas of common interest.
Meeting with parliament speaker
During his visit, al-Shaibani also met Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri. Following the meeting, he said the discussions were dedicated to improving relations between Syria and Lebanon and enhancing cooperation between the two countries.
Responding to questions about Hezbollah, al-Shaibani rejected reports that the group had been part of the talks with Berri. He nevertheless said, "If meeting Hezbollah serves the interest, we are open to it," while stressing that the meeting itself focused exclusively on bilateral relations.
Broader diplomatic agenda
Lebanese media reported that al-Shaibani's visit includes additional meetings with senior government officials as well as political and religious figures. The visit comes as Syria and Lebanon continue diplomatic engagement on political, economic and regional issues affecting both countries and the wider Middle East.
