An Iranian cargo ship transporting rice safely arrived at its destination after a reported US attempt to intercept it in the Oman Sea, Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency reported on Thursday. The bulk carrier crossed the Oman Sea under the protection of naval units from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) before reaching port.
US seizure attempt confirmed
Earlier this week, Iran confirmed that US forces had seized an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel in the Gulf of Oman, accusing Washington of violating a fragile ceasefire. Tehran warned of retaliation following the incident. The latest voyage’s safe completion suggests Iran is continuing maritime operations despite heightened US naval presence in the region.
Ceasefire extended indefinitely
The US and Israel launched a joint offensive on Iran on February 28, killing more than 3,300 people before a two-week ceasefire was brokered by Pakistan on April 8. While the truce was originally set to expire on April 22, President Donald Trump extended it indefinitely on April 21 at the request of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and military chief Asim Munir. Iran has repeatedly accused Washington of violating the ceasefire through naval actions.
