Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in Islamabad for his first overseas visit since the US-Israel war began in February. He was welcomed by Pakistan’s President Zardari and Prime Minister Sharif. The visit aims to convey Iran’s gratitude for Pakistan’s mediation efforts and to discuss trade, energy, border security, and regional cooperation.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in Pakistan on Tuesday for his first overseas trip since the armed conflict involving Iran, the US, and Israel began in February. Landing in Islamabad, he was welcomed by President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and several ministers. Pezeshkian is accompanied by a high-level delegation of Cabinet ministers and senior officials. According to the Iranian Embassy, the visit aims to convey the gratitude of the Iranian government and people to Pakistan following a year marked by solidarity and Islamabad’s diplomatic efforts to reduce regional tensions.

Mediation and bilateral agenda

Pakistan secured a ceasefire on April 8, hosted the highest-level talks between the US and Iran on April 12-13, and later facilitated the electronic signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding on June 18. The two sides will review the current state of bilateral relations and discuss ways to strengthen cooperation in trade, energy, border security, regional connectivity, and people-to-people exchanges. They will also exchange views on regional and international developments following the signing of the Islamabad MoU. Pezeshkian previously paid a state visit to Pakistan last August.
