Iran's Araghchi thanks Türkiye for 'prayers and support' amid war

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi expressed gratitude Friday to Türkiye and the Turkish people for their "prayers and support" during Ramadan, calling it a "great source of strength." His message came despite recent incidents of Iranian missiles entering Turkish airspace, which Ankara has condemned as unacceptable.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi "sincerely" thanked Türkiye and the Turkish people Friday for their "prayers and support" amid the ongoing US-Israeli war against Tehran. "During these blessed days of Ramadan, the prayers and solidarity shown by our brotherly Turkish nation and our friend, the Republic of Türkiye, toward the Iranian people are a great source of strength and morale for us," Araghchi wrote in Turkish on X.

Defiance and hope
Emphasizing that Iran will "continue to resolutely defend its sovereignty and the security of its people," Araghchi said Tehran believes "justice and peace will prevail." His message struck a defiant tone even as the conflict has killed over 1,300 people in Iran, according to Iranian authorities, including former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Context of tensions
Araghchi's remarks came after Türkiye's National Defense Ministry announced that a ballistic munition fired from Iran into Turkish airspace was neutralized by NATO air and missile defense assets deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean. It was the third such incident since the US-Israel war on Iran began in late February, prompting Ankara to deliver firm messages that such violations are unacceptable.

Regional dynamics
Despite the missile incidents, Türkiye has maintained communication channels with Iran and opposed the US-Israeli strikes while also condemning Iranian attacks on neighboring countries. Araghchi's expression of gratitude reflects the complex relationship between Ankara and Tehran, who share a border and maintain economic ties even as regional conflicts create tensions.
