Iraq backs Türkiye's dialogue with PKK for regional solution

Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein has expressed support for Türkiye's ongoing dialogue with the PKK, aiming for a comprehensive solution. During talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, both officials also advanced cooperation on shared water resources, planning to sign a framework agreement to manage this vital mutual interest.
Iraq has declared its support for Türkiye's diplomatic efforts to engage in dialogue with the PKK terrorist organization, seeking a lasting resolution to a conflict that has impacted the region for decades. The announcement was made by Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein during a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, in a significant show of regional solidarity.
Support for Dialogue and Regional Stability
“Iraq supports dialogue between Türkiye and the PKK and hopes for a solution that satisfies all sides,” Minister Hussein stated, as reported by the Iraqi News Agency (INA). This endorsement comes following the PKK's announced dissolution and withdrawal from Türkiye, developments that have opened a potential path toward a more stable and secure regional environment.
Advancing Bilateral Cooperation on Water
Characterizing Iraq-Türkiye relations as "historic," Hussein noted that their discussions heavily focused on the critical issue of shared water resources. He revealed that a strategic document outlining a framework for joint water management is set to be signed imminently, representing a vital step for both nations' agricultural and economic security.
Deepening Strategic Ties
The water agreement adds to a robust portfolio of 26 existing memoranda of understanding between Baghdad and Ankara. This collaboration is further institutionalized through the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council established in 2009, with trade and security continuing to be central pillars of the deepening partnership between the two neighboring countries.
