Iraq backs US-Iran truce, says it strengthens regional peace

Iraq’s foreign ministry on Tuesday welcomed a two-week pause in hostilities between Washington and Tehran, stating the move would help de-escalate regional tensions. Türkiye, a key regional actor, also voiced support for the ceasefire as a step toward lasting stability.
Iraq has officially welcomed the two-week ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, describing the temporary halt in hostilities as a crucial step toward reinforcing regional security and stability. In a statement carried by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Baghdad’s foreign ministry expressed approval of the pause, which it said would lower tensions and open pathways for calm.
Regional stability
The Iraqi government emphasized its backing for any international or regional initiative aimed at containing crises through dialogue and diplomacy. Officials urged all parties to strictly observe the ceasefire and refrain from any provocations that could rekindle conflict. Iraq also called for building on this positive momentum with sustained negotiations to address underlying disputes and foster mutual trust.
Türkiye’s role
As a neighboring country deeply invested in regional peace, Türkiye has consistently advocated for de-escalation between Washington and Tehran. Ankara views the temporary truce as a validation of diplomatic efforts and hopes it will lead to a permanent resolution. Turkish diplomatic sources noted that stability in Iraq and the broader Gulf region directly impacts Türkiye’s security and economic interests.

Ceasefire details
US President Donald Trump announced the two-week suspension of military operations against Iran, just under two hours before a self-imposed deadline for Tehran to reopen a strategic strait and accept an agreement. Trump had warned that failure to comply would result in the destruction of “an entire civilization.” The Iraqi foreign ministry reaffirmed its commitment to a balanced foreign policy, respecting state sovereignty, good neighborly relations, and non-interference in internal affairs.
