Iraq’s Coordination Framework names Ali Al-Zaidi as PM candidate

Iraq’s largest parliamentary bloc, the Coordination Framework, has nominated Ali Al-Zaidi as its candidate for prime minister. President Nizar Amidi is expected to formally task him with forming a government. Under the constitution, Al-Zaidi has 30 days to form a cabinet and secure a parliamentary vote of confidence.
The Coordination Framework, Iraq’s largest political alliance in parliament, announced on Monday evening that it has selected Ali Al-Zaidi as its nominee for prime minister, according to the state news agency INA. President Nizar Amidi is now expected to formally assign Al-Zaidi to form a new government. Under Article 76 of Iraq’s constitution, the prime minister-designate must present a cabinet within 30 days of being tasked and then secure a vote of confidence from the Council of Representatives.
Political context
The nomination comes after weeks of deliberation within the Shiite-led Coordination Framework, which holds approximately 130 to 140 seats out of 329. The bloc had previously nominated former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, but his candidacy faced opposition from the United States. Al-Zaidi’s selection appears to be a compromise candidate acceptable to both the framework’s factions and international partners. The new prime minister will face urgent challenges, including managing the ongoing economic fallout from the Iran war, maintaining security, and balancing relations with Washington, Tehran, and Gulf states.
