Israel weighs new Lebanon offensive as tensions escalate

Tensions on the Israel-Lebanon border have sharply increased following a deadly Israeli raid and drone overflights. The Israeli government held a security meeting to discuss a potential new military operation, while Lebanese leaders have ordered their army to confront any further border violations.
A recent Israeli military incursion into southern Lebanon and drone flights over Beirut have significantly heightened tensions, raising fears of a broader conflict. The situation has prompted the Israeli government to convene a high-level security meeting to deliberate a potential new offensive against Lebanon, citing concerns over Hezbollah's rearmament.
Security Meeting and Israeli Justifications
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presided over a security council meeting where officials discussed a possible military intervention. According to Israel's KAN broadcaster, senior officials alleged that Hezbollah is smuggling short-range missiles from Syria and rebuilding its strength. "No one can expect us to bury our heads in the sand," one official stated, framing the proposed offensive as a preemptive measure.
Lebanese Condemnation and Readiness
In response, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the recent incursion into the Belida municipality, where an Israeli force killed a local council worker, labeling it "unacceptable." He has instructed the Lebanese army to confront any future border violations. President Aoun affirmed a commitment to diplomatic channels but noted that "the other side responded with hostility," emphasizing that negotiations "require mutual will."
A Fragile Truce and Broader Aims
The current volatility threatens a truce that has been repeatedly violated. Since the ceasefire announced on November 26, 2024, Israel has been accused of over 4,500 violations. Furthermore, Israeli forces maintain a presence at five military points in southern Lebanon, despite agreements requiring their withdrawal. Meanwhile, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam reiterated the state's "irreversible" decision to bring all armed groups' weapons under state control, a move central to Lebanon's sovereignty.
