Israeli airstrike kills four in Gaza City, ceasefire under scrutiny

An Israeli airstrike in Gaza City killed four Palestinians and injured others on Saturday, according to a medical source. The strike hit a civilian car on the Al-Rashid coastal road. The Israeli military stated it targeted and killed Raed Saad, a senior Hamas official, in response to an earlier bomb attack on its soldiers. Hamas condemned the action as a "criminal violation" of the US-backed ceasefire agreement.
Four Palestinians were killed and several others wounded in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on Saturday, further straining a fragile ceasefire agreement. Medical sources in Gaza stated that the casualties occurred when a strike hit a civilian vehicle traveling on Al-Rashid Street, a coastal road west of the city.
Conflicting Accounts of the Attack's Target
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the strike but presented a different account, stating its objective was to eliminate Raed Saad, a high-ranking Hamas member. Israeli Army Radio described Saad as the second-highest figure in the group's military wing in Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz linked the operation to a bomb attack earlier in the day that injured two Israeli soldiers in southern Gaza.
Hamas Condemns "Criminal Violation" of Ceasefire
Hamas swiftly denounced the strike, labeling it a deliberate breach of the ceasefire agreement established under a US-led peace plan. In an official statement, the group accused Israel of "deliberately seeking to undermine and sabotage the ceasefire agreement by escalating its ongoing violations." Hamas called on international mediators and guarantor nations to take responsibility and restrain the Israeli government, which it accused of reneging on its obligations.
Mounting Casualties Amid Ongoing Tensions
This incident adds to a reported tally of hundreds of Palestinian casualties that Gaza health authorities attribute to Israeli actions since the ceasefire nominally took effect on October 10. The war, which began in October 2023, has resulted in a significant loss of life and injury in the densely populated enclave, according to figures provided by local officials.
