Israeli forces shell southern Syria, push into Daraa countryside

Israeli forces conducted artillery strikes in southern Syria and advanced into the western Daraa countryside late Wednesday, according to Syria's state news agency SANA, which detailed shelling near villages and a brief incursion by military vehicles that fired on agricultural land before withdrawing.
SANA reported that Israeli forces targeted the outskirts of Saisoun village in western Daraa and the vicinity of the al-Mantara Dam in Quneitra province with artillery fire. The agency stated that two shells struck near Saisoun, though no casualties were immediately reported from either location.
An Israeli unit comprising three military vehicles also advanced toward Wadi al-Raqad Road in the Yarmouk Basin, SANA noted. Soldiers opened machine-gun fire on agricultural fields planted with wheat and barley before pulling back to their positions, the agency added.
Post-Assad occupation
Israel declared the 1974 Disengagement Agreement void following the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime in late 2024 and subsequently moved to occupy the buffer zone along the frontier. Despite the new Syrian administration issuing no threats toward Israel, Israeli forces have conducted airstrikes inside Syria since Assad's ouster, killing civilians and striking military installations, equipment and ammunition depots.

Syrian authorities have not issued statements regarding Wednesday's shelling or the brief incursion. The latest operations add to a pattern of almost-daily Israeli violations of Syrian sovereignty that have persisted since the regime change.
