Israeli rights groups condemn ban on aid organizations in Gaza and West Bank

Nineteen Israeli human rights organizations have jointly condemned the government's decision to revoke the operating licenses of 37 international humanitarian groups in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. The groups warned the move "undermines principled humanitarian action" amid a severe aid crisis.
Legal notices issued to end operations by March 2026
On Tuesday, the Israeli government began sending official notices to the affected organizations, informing them that their registrations would be canceled starting January 2026, with all activities required to cease by March of that year. This action significantly restricts the operational framework for international relief efforts in the Palestinian territories.
Warnings of compounded humanitarian suffering
In a joint statement, prominent organizations including Adalah and B'Tselem stated that humanitarian access has been "severely constrained" since October 2023, with essential supplies like food and medicine "delayed or denied." They argued that banning aid groups endangers both staff and communities and compromises effective aid delivery, calling for an immediate halt to the deregistration process.
Precedent of action against UNRWA
This decision follows a similar pattern of measures against international bodies. In 2024, Israel's Knesset passed legislation banning the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), citing disputed allegations about staff involvement in the October 2023 attacks. The government later enacted a law to cut utilities to UNRWA facilities, raising further concerns about the welfare of civilians dependent on aid.
