Israeli soldier killed near Lebanon border

A 47-year-old Israeli master sergeant was killed by an explosive-laden drone launched by Hezbollah near the Lebanese border, despite a ceasefire extension. The death comes just days before US-hosted peace talks between Israel and Lebanon in Washington.
The Israeli military has announced the death of a senior non-commissioned officer during combat operations along the border with Lebanon. According to Asharq News, the soldier was killed late Sunday in northern Israel after Hezbollah launched multiple explosive-laden drones toward the area. The army identified the fallen soldier as Master Sergeant Alexander Glovanyov, 47.
Ceasefire violations continue
Despite a ceasefire that took effect on April 17 and was later extended until mid-May, daily exchanges of fire persist along the Israel-Lebanon frontier. Israeli forces continue to carry out strikes inside Lebanese territory, while Hezbollah has repeatedly targeted Israeli positions with drones and rockets. Since March 2 — shortly after the Iran war began in late February — Israeli attacks on Lebanon have killed at least 2,846 people, injured 8,693, and displaced more than one million. Israel also maintains a so-called “buffer zone” inside Lebanese land.
Upcoming peace talks
The United States is scheduled to host peace negotiations between Israel and Lebanon on May 14-15 in Washington, DC. However, the latest fatality underscores the fragility of the current truce. For Türkiye, which has consistently supported Lebanon’s sovereignty and called for an end to hostilities, the ongoing bloodshed near its southern neighbour’s border remains a source of deep concern. Ankara continues to advocate for a diplomatic resolution and respect for international law in the region.
