Kazakhstan’s Tokayev orders army reforms within 2 years

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has given Kazakhstan two years to complete comprehensive military reforms, including technological modernization of the armed forces. While reiterating a preference for diplomacy, Tokayev said Astana must be ready to defend national interests from “firmer positions” in an increasingly turbulent global environment.
Kazakhstan’s leader has set a two-year deadline for a sweeping overhaul of the nation’s defense apparatus, citing rising global instability. Speaking on Defender of the Fatherland Day, May 7, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stressed that while his country remains committed to peaceful conflict resolution, it must also prepare to protect its sovereignty with greater resolve.
Modernization amid regional turbulence
Tokayev called for increasing Kazakhstan’s defense potential and prioritizing the technological upgrade of the armed forces, describing this as “a requirement of the current unstable, turbulent times.” He added that comprehensive reforms must extend to paramilitary structures as well. “This is a strategically important task that must be resolved in a short time frame – within two years,” he said. The president reaffirmed his belief that all disputes should be settled through diplomacy and negotiations, but warned that Astana is ready to act “from firmer positions” if necessary, while strictly adhering to international law.
