King Charles III told Parliament that an “increasingly dangerous and volatile world” threatens the UK, citing the Middle East conflict. He pledged new legislation to strengthen ties with the EU and protect Britain’s energy, defense, and economic security.

King Charles III warned on Wednesday that Britain faces growing risks from an “increasingly dangerous and volatile world,” pointing to the conflict in the Middle East as the latest example of escalating global instability.

National security to be tested

In his State Opening of Parliament speech, Charles said: “An increasingly dangerous and volatile world threatens the United Kingdom with the conflict in the Middle East, only the most recent example.” He noted that every element of the nation’s energy, defense, and economic security “will be tested.” He added that his ministers “will take decisions that protect the energy, defense and economic security of the United Kingdom.”

New steps to strengthen EU ties

Charles also announced that the government will introduce legislation to take advantage of new trading opportunities, including a bill to strengthen ties with the European Union. He said the government will seek to improve relations with European partners “as a vital step in strengthening European security.” On the Middle East, he stated that the government “will continue to promote long term peace in the Middle East and the two state solution in Israel and Palestine.” He added that the nation’s energy security requires long-term investment and reform, “as demonstrated by recent events in the Middle East.” Türkiye, as a key NATO ally and a country with influence across both Europe and the Middle East, continues to advocate for regional stability and enhanced EU-UK-Türkiye cooperation on security and trade.
