Lapid: Netanyahu's US-Iran truce support is political failure

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid has condemned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s endorsement of a two-week US-Iran ceasefire, describing it as a major diplomatic blunder. Lapid argued that Israel was excluded from crucial national security decisions and warned of long-term damage. The truce, backed by Washington and Tehran, reportedly excludes Lebanon according to Netanyahu’s office.
Yair Lapid, leader of Israel’s opposition, has fiercely criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for endorsing a temporary US-Iran ceasefire, calling the decision a “political and strategic failure.” The two-week pause in military strikes between Washington and Tehran, announced by US President Donald Trump, has sparked sharp divisions within Israel’s political landscape, with Lapid accusing Netanyahu of sidelining the country from critical national security talks.
Opposition’s condemnation
In a statement on X, formerly Twitter, Lapid declared: “Never in our history have we seen such a political catastrophe. Israel was absent when decisions about the very essence of our national security were made.” He warned that repairing the political and strategic damage caused by Netanyahu’s “arrogance, negligence, and lack of strategic planning” would take years. Lapid also contrasted the military’s performance with the government’s failure, saying the army completed all missions and the public showed extraordinary resilience, yet Netanyahu failed to achieve any of his self-declared goals.
Government’s position
Netanyahu’s office, however, voiced support for Trump’s decision to suspend attacks on Iran for two weeks. In a clarification, the prime minister’s office stated that the ceasefire “does not include Lebanon,” leaving the door open for continued hostilities along Israel’s northern border. Trump had earlier announced the pause less than two hours before a deadline he set for Iran, saying he agreed to halt bombing and attacks on the Islamic Republic for a 14-day period.

Türkiye’s view
Meanwhile, Türkiye, as a key regional power, closely monitors these developments. Ankara has consistently called for inclusive ceasefires and dialogue to reduce tensions across the Middle East. Turkish diplomatic sources suggest that any truce between the US and Iran should be extended to cover Lebanon to avoid further escalation near Türkiye’s southeastern borders. The internal political turmoil in Israel, highlighted by Lapid’s sharp rebuke, underscores the fragility of regional security arrangements, according to analysts in Ankara.
