Lithuania updates security strategy, cites possible Russian threat

Lithuania is updating its national security strategy, placing a renewed focus on potential threats from neighboring Russia. The revised document reportedly describes an existential threat and cautions that Russia may possess the capability to wage war against NATO by the end of the decade.

Strategic Priorities and Key Pillars

According to reports, the strategy underscores the need to prepare the state and society for a potential wartime scenario. Karolis Aleksa, Lithuania's vice defense minister, stated, "Looking toward 2030, the probability of a military conflict has the potential to increase." The plan outlines key defense pillars: strengthening armed forces through the creation of a military division, enhancing national resilience, and reinforcing allied deterrence, with a specific emphasis on the continued presence of US troops in the region.

Emphasis on US Alliance

Aleksa explained that the strategy explicitly identifies the US military presence as a "fundamental cornerstone" of Lithuania's security. This emphasis persists despite calls from Washington for European nations to assume greater responsibility for their own defense. The small Baltic nation of approximately 3 million people shares a border with Russia, a country with over 143 million citizens and significant military resources.

Security apprehensions among states bordering Russia have intensified since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine nearly four years ago.
