Macron: French navy intercepts sanctioned Russian tanker

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday that naval forces intercepted a sanctioned tanker originating from Russia in the Atlantic Ocean, describing the operation as part of Paris' commitment to upholding international maritime law and enforcing sanctions against Moscow over its war in Ukraine.
French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday that French naval forces intercepted a sanctioned tanker traveling from Russia in the Atlantic Ocean, identifying the vessel as the Tagor and describing the operation as part of ongoing efforts to enforce international restrictions against Moscow. Posting on the social media platform X, Macron stated that the boarding occurred on the high seas with support from partners including the United Kingdom.
"The French Navy intercepted yesterday morning a new tanker under international sanctions coming from Russia: the Tagor," he said, noting that the action was carried out in strict compliance with the law of the sea. The operation marks the latest in a series of enforcement actions targeting vessels suspected of violating sanctions imposed following Russia's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Sanctions enforcement
Macron emphasized that Paris remains fully committed to preventing the circumvention of sanctions designed to limit Russia's capacity to finance its military operations. "It is unacceptable that ships circumvent international sanctions, violate the law of the sea and finance the war that Russia has been waging against Ukraine for more than four years," he said, underscoring the economic imperatives driving the enforcement measures.

The French president stressed that such interceptions serve both legal and strategic purposes, disrupting potential revenue streams for Moscow while asserting maritime governance in international waters. Western powers have progressively tightened restrictions on Russian energy exports since the conflict began, targeting shadow fleets that attempt to transport oil outside established regulatory frameworks.
Maritime safety
Macron also warned that vessels operating outside established maritime protocols pose significant risks beyond sanctions violations, citing environmental and navigational hazards. "These ships, which do not respect the most basic rules of maritime navigation, also constitute a threat to the environment and to the safety of all," he added.
The interception comes as European navies increase patrols in the Atlantic and Mediterranean to monitor sanctions compliance, with French authorities coordinating closely with British and other allied forces. Russia has faced mounting economic pressure since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, with international restrictions targeting its banking, energy, and shipping sectors.
