Macron: ‘Nothing justifies’ Lebanon escalation, urges Hormuz reopening

French President Emmanuel Macron declared that “nothing justifies” the escalating violence in southern Lebanon, calling for an urgent ceasefire and the immediate, unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. He stressed that regional stability must begin with Lebanon and that France stands ready to help resume maritime traffic.
French President Emmanuel Macron said Sunday that “nothing justifies” the ongoing escalation in southern Lebanon. In a post on X, Macron declared: “France will continue its support for the Lebanese authorities in their efforts to restore state sovereignty and the country’s territorial integrity.” His remarks came as Israeli forces continue daily attacks across Lebanon despite a ceasefire that took effect on April 17 and was later extended for 45 days. Lebanese health officials report that Israeli strikes since March 2 have killed over 3,370 people and wounded more than 10,000.
Call for US‑Iran deal and maritime security
Macron said he had spoken with regional leaders and stressed the urgent need for a swift agreement between the United States and Iran. “This opportunity must be seized now,” he said, adding that priorities must include an immediate, unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz in line with international law, followed by broader negotiations on nuclear programmes, ballistic missiles, and regional stability. France, he noted, is ready to help resume maritime traffic through an independent multinational mission established with the United Kingdom and to support nuclear discussions.
Stability must begin with Lebanon
Macron emphasised that regional stability must start with Lebanon, where “it is urgent that the weapons fall silent — all of them, and for good.” France has been a key donor to Lebanese institutions and has supported the Lebanese Armed Forces.
