Macron to visit China as Paris, Beijing seek stronger strategic ties

French President Emmanuel Macron will travel to China this week for a three-day state visit hosted by President Xi Jinping, as both governments aim to reinforce their strategic cooperation amid mounting geopolitical tensions from Ukraine to global trade disputes. The trip highlights France’s role within the EU and Beijing’s call for greater European independence.
French President Emmanuel Macron is set to arrive in China on Wednesday for his fourth official state visit, part of ongoing efforts by Paris and Beijing to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties. The visit follows an invitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping, according to a statement released by China’s Foreign Ministry.
Long-standing China-France relationship
Officials in Beijing noted that the two nations mark more than six decades of diplomatic engagement, evolving into what both sides describe as a “comprehensive strategic partnership.” Bilateral trade has approached $80 billion, reflecting accelerating cooperation in recent years.
Global tensions shaping agenda
Macron’s trip comes as France, the EU’s second-largest economy, navigates several pressing foreign policy issues — from the war in Ukraine and US-China friction to ongoing trade disagreements between Brussels and Beijing. Discussions are expected to include international security concerns and economic challenges affecting Europe and Asia.
Xi Jinping emphasizes EU autonomy
Xi and Macron previously held talks in May, where the Chinese leader reiterated his view that Europe should act as “an independent pole in a multipolar world.” China says it supports the EU pursuing “strategic autonomy," a stance aligned with Paris’ frequent calls for reduced dependency on Washington.
Beijing urges deeper cooperation
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stressed that the partnership carries “unique values and an important mission” at a time when the global environment is increasingly unstable. He added that enhanced communication and practical cooperation would serve both nations during what he described as a turbulent period for international affairs.
