Malaysia hosts 47th ASEAN Summit

Malaysia is hosting the 47th ASEAN Summit, with leaders from Southeast Asia and key global partners in attendance. The three-day event addressed trade, regional security, and the world crisis. Here are some key highlights from the summit held in Kuala Lumpur (26–28 Oct 2025):

🔴 Timor‑Leste officially became the 11th member of ASEAN via a Declaration of Accession signed during the summit.

🔴 The summit was held under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability”, reflecting Malaysia’s chairmanship agenda.

🔴 A high-level trade agreement between the United States and several ASEAN countries, including Malaysia, covering critical minerals and rare-earth exports, was signed.

🔴 An upgraded free trade agreement between ASEAN and China (often dubbed “3.0 version”) was signed, expanding cooperation into digital trade, green economy and new sectors.

🔴 A press briefing by the ASEAN Secretary-General confirmed that the summit produced a large number of outcome documents, including economic, digital and security cooperation frameworks.

🔴 The summit’s Foreign Ministers’ meeting with the US reaffirmed the long-standing US-ASEAN partnership, addressed topics such as digital economy, people-to-people exchanges, and referenced the situation in Gaza. ASEAN member states signalled support for President Trump’s Gaza plan, urging a “just and durable peace” in the Middle East. The summit’s foreign ministers meeting also referenced the humanitarian situation in Gaza, with remarks that the region must not turn a blind eye to such conflicts.

🔴 The summit emphasised the importance of deeper regional integration, supply-chain resilience, and economic connectivity among ASEAN states.

🔴 The high-level attendance included global leaders such as the US President, and signalled the summit was among the largest in ASEAN history in terms of external participation.

🔴 Malaysia, as host and current chair, stressed its commitment to ensuring smooth proceedings and meaningful outcomes.

🔴 The summit’s agenda also included discussions on digital economy frameworks (e.g., ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement) and transnational crime (online scams, human trafficking) in cooperation with dialogue partners.
