Malaysia's Anwar urges dialogue to ease Thailand-Cambodia border tensions

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called for dialogue and mutual respect to ease border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia. Anwar spoke with the leaders of both countries ahead of a key ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting, urging them to adhere to the spirit of dialogue to maintain regional peace and stability.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has engaged in diplomatic outreach to de-escalate border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, urging both neighboring countries to prioritize dialogue. The move comes ahead of a crucial Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) foreign ministers' meeting scheduled for Monday, where the conflict is expected to be a central topic.
Anwar's Appeal for Dialogue and Wisdom
In posts on the social media platform X, Anwar detailed his separate phone conversations with the Thai and Cambodian prime ministers. “I emphasized the importance for Cambodia and Thailand to adhere to the spirit of dialogue, wisdom, and mutual respect in order to end the tensions and maintain the peace and stability in the region,” he stated. Malaysia, as a fellow ASEAN member and a previous mediator, is positioning itself to help facilitate a resolution.
Context of a Suspended Peace Agreement
The diplomatic push follows the breakdown of a peace agreement brokered in Kuala Lumpur in October. That agreement, signed in the presence of former U.S. President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Anwar, was later suspended after Thai soldiers were seriously injured in a landmine explosion in a border province. The incident reignited a long-running and volatile border dispute that has seen repeated outbreaks of violence over the years.
ASEAN's Role in Regional Conflict Resolution
The upcoming ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting represents a formal regional mechanism to address the conflict. Anwar's preemptive diplomacy underscores the bloc's concern over instability within its borders and its preference for peaceful conflict resolution. The success of these efforts hinges on the willingness of both Thailand and Cambodia to return to negotiations and honor previous commitments to cease hostilities.
