A massive fire erupted late Monday in Jakarta's densely populated Kemayoran district, displacing 620 residents and destroying 330 homes as authorities deployed 175 personnel and 35 engines to contain the blaze amid congested streets and panicked crowds attempting to salvage belongings, according to state media reports.

A massive fire late Monday swept through a densely populated residential quarter in Indonesia's capital, displacing 620 people and destroying 330 homes in the Kemayoran district of central Jakarta, according to state-run media. The blaze erupted in the evening hours and rapidly consumed structures across several neighborhood blocks in the tightly packed settlement.

Emergency response hampered by crowds

Firefighters faced significant challenges during the overnight operation, including congested access roads and large gatherings of onlookers at the scene. Residents attempting to retrieve personal belongings from burning homes further complicated containment efforts as crews worked to establish control of the spreading flames in the tightly packed district. The Central Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency deployed 35 fire engines and 175 personnel to suppress the conflagration.

Damage assessment underway

Authorities brought the fire under control at approximately 11:30 p.m. local time on Monday and fully extinguished the remaining hotspots by 4:15 a.m. on Tuesday. Agency head Syarifudin said approximately 620 people lost their homes in the incident. Officials noted that comprehensive damage assessments and relief measures for displaced families are currently underway.
