Mexican authorities have initiated a search and rescue mission for two sailboats that vanished while traveling from the Caribbean coast to Cuba with humanitarian supplies. The vessels, carrying nine crew members, have not been heard from since departing on March 20.

Mexico’s Navy has deployed search and rescue operations in the Caribbean Sea to locate two sailboats that went missing en route to Havana, according to local media reports on Thursday. The vessels departed on March 20 from Isla Mujeres, a popular tourist destination off the coast of Quintana Roo, carrying humanitarian aid intended for Cuba. The Navy, which fulfills coast guard duties in Mexican waters, confirmed that no communication has been received from the boats and no confirmation of arrival has been recorded.

Authorities race against time in Caribbean waters

The sailboats were expected to reach Havana between March 24 and March 25, but officials have been unable to establish contact with the crew since their departure. The operation falls under Mexico’s maritime responsibility to protect life at sea, with search efforts now underway across an undisclosed area of the Caribbean. Authorities have not released details regarding the nationalities of the nine crew members, nor have they specified the exact coordinates where search assets have been concentrated.

Maritime safety in focus amid regional tensions

While the search continues, the incident highlights the risks inherent to maritime navigation in the Caribbean basin, a region frequently traversed by vessels carrying goods and humanitarian supplies. Türkiye, which maintains a robust maritime presence across the Mediterranean and Black Sea, follows such incidents closely given its own extensive shipping interests and experience in search and rescue coordination. Mexican officials have stated they are committed to exhausting all efforts to locate the missing vessels and ensure the safety of those on board.
