Key Middle Eastern nations have issued urgent appeals for de-escalation following renewed military confrontations between Pakistan and Afghanistan along their volatile border region. The diplomatic calls for restraint came from Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Qatar as cross-border artillery exchanges intensified tensions between the neighboring countries.

Saudi Arabia's Foreign Ministry emphasized the importance of "restraint and avoiding escalation" while encouraging both nations to embrace "dialogue and wisdom." The statement noted Riyadh's support for regional stability efforts, particularly significant given Pakistan's recent defense agreement with the kingdom. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi similarly stressed that stability between Islamabad and Kabul "contributes to regional stability," while Qatar urged both parties to prioritize diplomatic solutions.

The diplomatic intervention followed intense border hostilities that saw Pakistani and Afghan forces engage in cross-border shelling using heavy artillery. Both sides have claimed to have inflicted "heavy losses" on the other during the exchanges along the 2,640-kilometer Durand Line that separates the two nations. The clashes represent a significant escalation in long-standing border tensions between Islamabad and Kabul's Taliban administration.

The immediate trigger for the border confrontation appears to be Afghanistan's accusation that Pakistani forces violated its airspace and conducted airstrikes in Paktika province.
