A court in Montenegro has cleared two Turkish citizens of involvement in a stabbing incident in Podgorica, citing a lack of evidence. The ruling comes after the initial allegations had sparked local tensions and led to the temporary suspension of visa-free travel for Turkish nationals.

A court in Podgorica has dismissed charges against two Turkish nationals accused of involvement in a stabbing incident, concluding there was no evidence linking them to the crime. The Higher Court in Montenegro's capital announced the decision on Friday, stating that surveillance footage confirmed the individuals were at their residence during the October 26 attack in the Zabjelo district.

Diplomatic Engagement and Initial Fallout

Following the initial reports, which wrongly implicated Turkish citizens, anti-Turkish sentiment emerged in parts of Podgorica. This prompted Montenegro's Prime Minister to announce a temporary suspension of the visa-free regime for Turkish nationals. In response, Türkiye's Foreign Ministry initiated immediate contact with Montenegrin authorities to ensure the safety of its citizens and address the situation.

Turkish Diplomacy Secures Assurances

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held phone calls with Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajić and Deputy Prime Minister Ervin Ibrahimović, conveying Türkiye's expectations for the protection of its citizens. Montenegrin officials provided assurances that all necessary measures would be taken to prevent further incidents and protect the Turkish community, highlighting the importance of bilateral relations.

Restoring Bilateral Confidence

The court's ruling, which definitively established the Turkish nationals' innocence, is seen as a critical step toward de-escalating tensions. Turkish Ambassador Baris Kalkavan had previously urged a thorough investigation and cautioned against letting the case damage the long-standing friendship between Türkiye and Montenegro, built on mutual respect and historical ties.
