A series of passenger plane crashes occurred worldwide in 2024, including an incident involving Azerbaijan Airlines on Wednesday morning that left dozens feared dead. The deadliest crash of the year took place in Brazil in August.
Following the crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines flight carrying 67 people from Baku to Russia's Grozny, near the Kazakh Caspian city of Aktau, in which 25 people survived, passenger plane accidents worldwide this year have come into focus.
The first major crash of the year occurred on Aug. 9 in Brazil, when an ATR-72 operated by Voepass Airlines crashed in Vinhedo, Sao Paulo.
The plane flying from Cascavel to Guarulhos crashed near a residential area, killing 62 people, including 58 passengers and four crew. The aircraft caught fire after impact, complicating the identification process of the victims.

The Aeronautical Accidents Investigation and Prevention Center (CENIPA) investigated and found that the pilots struggled with icing conditions.
In Japan, a collision between a passenger plane and a coast guard aircraft at Tokyo's Haneda Airport on Jan. 2 resulted in the killing of five coast guard members.
The crash occurred when both planes caught fire on the runway. The 379 passengers and crew members on the commercial flight were safely evacuated.
In the US, Alaska Airlines' Boeing 737 MAX 9 was forced to make an emergency landing on Jan. 5 after a part of its fuselage detached mid-flight.
En route from Oregon to California, the plane landed safely with 171 passengers and six crew members aboard.
On July 24, a plane crashed during takeoff from Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport, killing 18 people. The aircraft, operated by Saurya Airlines, was carrying 19 people. Despite his injuries, the pilot survived.
In another deadliest incident on Jan. 24, Moscow reported that a Russian military plane carrying Ukrainian prisoners of war was shot down in Belgorod by a Ukrainian rocket. All 74 people on board were killed, including six crew members and 65 Ukrainian soldiers.
Another Russian plane crashed on March 12 when an IL-76 military cargo plane went down in Ivanovo, killing all 15 people aboard. The crash was attributed to a fire in one of the plane's engines.
On July 12, a Sukhoi Superjet 100 crashed during a flight from Tretyakovo Airport to Vnukovo Airport, killing all three crew members.
