Over 35,000 flee Sudan's North Kordofan in four days amid fighting

Escalating violence in Sudan's North Kordofan state has forced more than 35,000 people to flee their homes within just four days, according to the UN migration agency. The displaced have sought refuge in White Nile state as clashes between military factions intensify.
The International Organization for Migration reported Thursday that worsening security conditions have driven more than 35,000 people from their homes in Sudan's North Kordofan state over a four-day period. The latest displacement includes 1,100 people who fled the city of Bara on Wednesday, adding to what the UN agency describes as a rapidly escalating humanitarian crisis.
Concentrated Displacement Waves
According to IOM data collected between October 26-29, multiple waves of displacement have occurred across several localities in North Kordofan, including Sheikan, Rahad, Bara, Umm Ruwaba, and Umm Damm Haj Ahmed. The total of 35,620 displaced civilians have primarily relocated to various locations in Ed-Dueim city within White Nile state in southern Sudan, straining resources in the host communities.
Ongoing Conflict and Casualties
The mass exodus follows a recent drone attack carried out by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the Zareibat Sheikh El Borai area in North Kordofan, which Sudanese authorities reported caused numerous casualties. This incident represents the latest in a series of violent confrontations between the RSF and the Sudanese army that have devastated the region.
Broader Conflict Context
The fighting in North Kordofan forms part of the wider conflict that began on April 15, 2023, between Sudan's military and the RSF. Despite numerous international mediation attempts, the war continues with devastating consequences, having killed approximately 20,000 people and displaced over 15 million others according to UN and local reports, creating one of the world's most severe C crises.
