Over 500 candidates elected unopposed in South Korea polls

South Korea's National Election Commission announced Saturday that 513 candidates have been elected unopposed in the upcoming June 3 local elections, with ballots cancelled in 307 districts where single-candidate races eliminated voter choice for key municipal posts.
South Korea's National Election Commission announced Saturday that 513 candidates have been elected unopposed in the upcoming June 3 local elections, with ballots cancelled in 307 electoral districts where single-candidate races left voters without a choice.
Among those automatically elected are three local government heads — Kim I-gang of Seo district and Kim Byung-nae of Nam district in Gwangju, alongside Lim Byeong-taek, mayor of Siheung — all representing the ruling Democratic Party, according to the Yonhap news agency.
Opposition boycott in stronghold cities
Gwangju has long served as a Democratic Party stronghold, while the main opposition People Power Party declined to contest the Siheung mayoral race, citing an inability to recruit viable candidates. The remaining 510 uncontested victors will serve as local council members across various districts, the commission noted.
