Pakistan seeks Singapore’s help over US-seized tankers

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said Islamabad has requested Singapore’s assistance in securing the repatriation of Pakistani and Iranian sailors aboard vessels seized by the United States near Singaporean waters.
Dar said he discussed the matter during a phone call with Vivian Balakrishnan, as diplomatic efforts continue following the interception of Iranian-linked tankers amid escalating tensions involving the US and Iran.
Pakistan coordinates with Iran and Singapore
Writing on X, Dar said Pakistan is maintaining close coordination with Abbas Araghchi regarding the detained crews and maritime developments.
He noted that the vessels remain close to Singaporean waters and thanked Singapore for its cooperation in addressing the situation.
Islamabad also expressed readiness to assist with the transfer of Iranian nationals back to Iran through Pakistani territory if necessary.
US maritime pressure on Iran expands
The developments come after the United States intercepted several Iranian-flagged oil tankers in Asian waters last month as part of broader efforts to tighten pressure on Tehran’s maritime trade network.
Washington has expanded enforcement operations targeting Iranian shipping routes following the escalation of the US-Israel conflict with Iran and ongoing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Pakistani officials said the country’s Foreign Ministry and other authorities are working with US officials and international partners to ensure the safety and early return of Pakistani nationals aboard the vessels.

The two sides also discussed maritime security, regional stability and recent incidents affecting international shipping routes in Asian and Gulf waters.
Pakistan has increasingly positioned itself as a regional intermediary amid rising geopolitical tensions involving the United States, Iran and Gulf countries.
