Philippines maintains Alert Level 3 as Mayon volcano rumbles

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported dozens of volcanic earthquakes and prolonged tremors over the past 24 hours while maintaining Alert Level 3 on Mayon volcano, warning nearby communities of potential lava flows and hazardous pyroclastic density currents.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology on Saturday reported intensified unrest at Mayon Volcano, recording 51 earthquakes and dozens of tremors over the past 24 hours while maintaining Alert Level 3 and warning communities of potential hazardous eruptions.
Heightened seismic activity
Phivolcs detected 51 volcanic earthquakes and 30 tremors lasting between two and 45 minutes alongside hundreds of rockfall events and six pyroclastic density current signals, according to local media outlet the Inquirer. The institute noted ongoing lava effusion has produced flows extending several kilometers along the Basud, Bonga, and Mi-isi gullies, while short-lived lava fountaining was observed from the crater.
Gas emissions and aviation hazards
Sulfur dioxide emissions reached 1,482 tons on Friday, exceeding the previous day's levels, while a volcanic plume drifted southwestward from the summit. Authorities maintained strict prohibitions on entry within the 6-kilometer permanent danger zone and warned pilots against flying aircraft near the active crater due to sudden explosive risks.

Evacuation warnings
Phivolcs warned nearby communities of multiple potential hazards including lava flows, rockfalls, and pyroclastic density currents that could occur without warning. The institute also cautioned that heavy rainfall could trigger lahars — dangerous mud or debris flows — along the volcano's slopes, urging continued vigilance as seismic activity persists.
