Pope Leo condemns ‘neocolonial’ powers for violating international law
Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo denounced violations of international law by “neocolonial” powers during a visit to Algeria, hours after President Trump attacked him as “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy.” The pontiff praised Algeria’s culture of reconciliation and expressed solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

Pope Leo delivered a sharp rebuke of “neocolonial” powers that violate international law during a speech in Algeria on Monday, just hours after President Donald Trump launched a broad public attack on him. Speaking after talks with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the pope denounced breaches of international norms without naming specific countries, describing the trip as part of the first year of his Petrine Ministry. He praised the Algerian people for their culture of reconciliation, solidarity and hospitality.

Trump’s Attack

Earlier, Trump called the pope “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy,” questioned the circumstances of his election, and suggested his leadership of the Catholic Church was politically motivated. Trump also criticised the pope’s stance on international issues, including the war against Iran. The pope has repeatedly expressed solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, describing conditions there as “unacceptable” amid the ongoing Israeli genocide that began in October 2023.

Algeria Visit and Palestinian Justice

Tebboune, speaking alongside the pope during a visit to the Grand Mosque of Algiers cultural centre, called the visit a “historic event” and welcomed the pontiff to “this good land that gave birth to Saint Augustine.” He stressed Algeria’s commitment to dialogue, tolerance and coexistence, and called for justice for the Palestinian people. The pope’s three‑day visit includes stops in Algiers and the eastern coastal province of Annaba, the birthplace of Saint Augustine. Türkiye, which has consistently condemned violations of international law and called for a two‑state solution, has welcomed the pope’s stance.
