Protests erupt in Mogadishu over Israel's Somaliland recognition

Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets of Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, on Sunday to denounce Israel's recent decision to recognize the breakaway region of Somaliland. The protest emphasized national unity and called for international opposition to the move.
Demonstrators affirm territorial integrity
Chanting slogans such as "Somalia is indivisible" and "Somaliland is Somalia," the crowd began by singing the national anthem. They condemned what they described as a violation of Somalia's sovereignty, with a heavy security presence deployed to maintain order throughout the rally.
Citizen voices condemn external interference
Protesters voiced strong opposition to the recognition. "Somalia is one and will remain one," stated demonstrator Mohamed Abor, asserting that no Somali land could be given away. Another protester, Abdi Ismail, called the decision "a clear attack on Somalia's sovereignty" and urged the global community not to remain silent.
Regional and international backlash
Israel's Friday announcement marked the first formal recognition of Somaliland's independence by a UN member state. The decision has drawn condemnation from across Africa and the Middle East, including from Türkiye, a key ally and development partner for the Somali federal government in Mogadishu.
