Russian President Vladimir Putin met Syria's top foreign and defense ministers, reaffirming Moscow's strategic support for Damascus's sovereignty and discussing enhanced military and economic cooperation.

Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks in Moscow with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra, focusing on strengthening bilateral ties across political, military, and economic spheres. The meeting, reported by Syria's state news agency SANA, underscores Russia's continued central role in the post-conflict landscape of its Middle Eastern ally.

Focus on military and economic cooperation

The discussions placed a particular emphasis on deepening strategic cooperation in defense and military industries. Beyond security, the talks explored avenues to expand trade, encourage investment, and support reconstruction projects critical for reviving Syria's devastated infrastructure and improving living conditions for its population.

Reaffirmation of sovereignty and regional stance

President Putin reaffirmed Russia's firm backing for Syria's territorial integrity and "full sovereignty," rejecting any initiatives that might partition the country. He also reiterated Moscow's condemnation of what he described as Israel's repeated violations of Syrian territory, labeling them a direct threat to regional stability.

Context of a transformed political landscape

This high-level meeting follows Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa's visit to Moscow in October, his first since assuming power. Sharaa leads a transitional government established after the ouster of long-time leader Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Russia in December 2024, ending decades of Baath Party rule. The talks signal Russia's ongoing engagement with Syria's new political reality.
