Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that bilateral trade with Tanzania grew by 20-25% last year as he hosted Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the Kremlin, describing the visit as a positive sign for future cooperation in energy, transport and education on the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Wednesday that bilateral trade with Tanzania increased by 20-25% last year as he hosted Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the Kremlin for talks marking the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, according to Anadolu Agency. Putin highlighted the significance of Hassan's decision to choose Russia as her first foreign destination for a state visit following her inauguration.

The Russian leader called the visit a "very positive sign" for the future of bilateral ties. He emphasized that the two nations enjoy strong potential to deepen their partnership across multiple sectors.

Cooperation potential

Putin noted that cooperation could expand significantly in areas including energy, geological exploration, transport, logistics, healthcare and education. "Last year we saw a growth in trade turnover of about 20-25%, which is a good indicator," Putin said, adding that both countries have every opportunity to increase trade volumes further.

The two leaders reviewed opportunities for expanding cooperation across these sectors, with particular focus on sustainable development projects and technical assistance programs.

Historic visit

Hassan expressed gratitude for the invitation and described the trip as "historically significant," noting that more than half a century had passed since the last Tanzanian state visit to Russia in 1969 by the nation's founding father. The Tanzanian president said she came to discuss bilateral cooperation and sustainable development.

She thanked Moscow for its contribution to Africa's liberation movements in the 1960s and its ongoing role in Tanzania's development. The Tanzanian leader emphasized the importance of continued partnership in advancing mutual interests.
