Putin warns drone strikes on Tuapse refinery risk environmental disaster

President Putin warned that drone strikes on energy facilities in the Russian port city of Tuapse could cause serious environmental consequences, as a regional state of emergency was declared following a massive fire at an oil refinery. Ukraine’s General Staff claimed responsibility for the attack as part of reducing Russia’s military-economic potential.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that drone strikes on energy facilities in the Black Sea port city of Tuapse could lead to severe environmental consequences, adding that “strikes against civilian infrastructure are becoming increasingly common.” A regional state of emergency was declared after a drone attack caused a massive fire at an oil refinery near the coast. The Krasnodar regional operational headquarters reported that 220 people and 50 pieces of equipment are working to extinguish the blaze, and 31 people—including nine children—have been evacuated.
Ukraine’s claim
Ukraine’s General Staff announced it carried out a second strike on the Tuapse oil refinery “as part of reducing the military-economic potential” of Russia. The facility has been targeted multiple times in recent weeks, including an April 16 attack that caused an oil spill. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed its air defenses shot down 186 Ukrainian drones across five regions, including Krasnodar, as well as the Black Sea, the Sea of Azov, and Crimea. Despite the claims, the Tuapse refinery fire continued to burn.
