Qatar's armed forces intercepted a missile attack targeting the country Tuesday evening, the defense ministry announced without providing further details. Al Jazeera reported explosions heard over Doha from interception operations, following earlier reports of five Iranian ballistic missiles shot down toward Qatari territory.

Qatar announced Tuesday evening that its armed forces intercepted a missile attack targeting the country, as Gulf states continue to face Iranian retaliatory strikes amid the ongoing US-Israeli campaign against Tehran. The defense ministry did not provide further details about the latest incident, but Qatar-based Al Jazeera television reported that explosions were heard in the skies over Doha caused by interception operations.

Previous interceptions

The defense ministry had earlier stated that air defenses shot down five Iranian ballistic missiles launched toward Qatari territory. The repeated interceptions highlight the ongoing threat to Gulf states from Iranian retaliation, as Tehran responds to the US-Israeli attacks that began Feb. 28 and have killed more than 1,200 people, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Regional context

Qatar, which hosts the massive Al Udeid Air Base housing US Central Command's forward headquarters, has found itself increasingly drawn into the confrontation despite efforts to maintain diplomatic balance. The country has been actively defending its airspace while pursuing diplomatic channels to de-escalate the widening conflict.

Continuing campaign

Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, with analysts estimating more than 3,000 projectiles launched since the conflict began. Gulf states are relying heavily on air defense systems while attempting to avoid direct participation in the war, though sustained attacks continue to test their defensive capabilities.
