The founder of leading LiDAR manufacturer RoboSense has declared vision-only autonomous driving systems insufficient for safety, directly challenging Tesla's approach. Steven Qiu advocates for multi-sensor integration, asserting that camera-based systems cannot reliably achieve higher automation levels without LiDAR technology.

The chief scientist of RoboSense, the world's largest automotive LiDAR supplier, has raised significant safety concerns about Tesla's camera-focused autonomous driving strategy. Steven Qiu contends that multi-sensor systems provide essential redundancy that vision-only approaches lack, particularly in challenging driving scenarios.

Technical Limitations of Vision-Only Systems

Speaking at Singapore's FutureChina Global Forum, Qiu explained that camera-based systems struggle with numerous "corner cases" that compromise safety. He illustrated this limitation with a practical example: "If there is a white car that has stopped in front of you, it would be challenging for a vision-only system to tell if it's a car or a white cloud in the sky."

The Role of LiDAR in Advanced Automation

The RoboSense founder emphasized that vehicles cannot progress to Level 3 or Level 4 automation under SAE International standards without incorporating LiDAR and complementary sensors. LiDAR technology uses laser beam emissions and return signal measurements to create precise environmental maps, providing critical data beyond visual spectrum capabilities.

Industry Position and Market Context

RoboSense, established in 2014, achieved its position as the global leader in passenger vehicle LiDAR systems in 2024 according to Yole Group analysis. This technical debate occurs as Tesla's Full Self-Driving system remains classified at Level 2 automation, requiring continuous human supervision despite the company's ambitious branding.
